Heide Fasnacht, Demo (2000)
Timing is everything. Since this chapter is all about the theme of time, I find it only fitting to talk about it. I found Fasnacht’s piece, Demo, interesting in that not only does it seem to stop time, but it gives the viewer the sensation of being able to control time. One statement that Chapter 2 makes on Demo is that, possibly, it could have a prophetic meaning. Seeing that it came out in 2000, it seems as if Fasnacht was telling of things to come with the attacks on the World Trade Canter a year later. So now my question: how would this piece be viewed had it come out post-9/11? Would it be a political statement? Maybe it would have a negative affect on the audience. Timing is everything.
Here’s another piece by Heide Fasnacht called Exploding Plane. ![]()
If interested, go to YouTube to see a short presentation of Der Lauf der Dinge (The Way Things Go), a cool chain reaction-like film mentioned at the beginning of Ch. 2.

Great question (about post-911 atmosphere and the reading of the piece)…I wonder if its even possible to look at this piece without 9/11 in mind? Any thoughts here?
The piece definitely makes an impact on how relating to 9/11 here by the way the pieces explode from the plane and the crumble of the building. I think rather than having a negative impact, it would be more so represent the horrific day and maintain the awe of the audience. The piece is amazing to look at because of all that is happening…there is so much to see here.
I think that there are a few ways to interpret this exploding plane piece, because now it would of course be linked to 9/11, but what about if 9/11 had never happened? Would people still look at it as though it was standing for something that would happen in the future or would it just be a weird explosion of some random plane? I would personally take it to be an explosion of a random plane. I did not immediately think of 9/11 either, just because it did not personally affect me in any way, except for when I travel by plane.
I might also take the pictures of the building sculpture to be the decay of humanity or materialistic things. I cannot directly place what the things coming out of the building are, but they do not look pleasant at all, they look grotesque. They almost look like they are eating the contents of the building from the outside, overwhelming the building and destroyed it over time.
I think that this piece is interesting to look at because the pieces have a nice fluidity. They are unpleasant to look at yet i can’t stop looking.
When i first looked at the piece labeled Demo, I did not immediately think of 9/11 and i do not think that i would have if someone did not bring it up. The same with the plane.
I think it would be interesting to see if the building and the plane were exhibited in the same room. If they were i believe then that people would be more likely to associate them with 9/11.
To be honest, I didn’t think of 9/11 when I saw this piece either. Had you not brought it up, I probably never would have. But maybe it doesn’t symbolize the 9/11 attack specifically. It could be a depiction of terrorism in general. Or it could be a depiction of how humanity has the power to destroy itself, either with one swift attack like a bomb or with time destroying the world like global warming.
